Research supports the fact that helping students develop a positive racial identity contributes to increased academic success. Through BRMA’s middle school arts camp, Seeking the Self, the arts are utilized as a powerful tool in this development for students. The high school Summer Writing Institute seeks to build on the students’ learning about allies and continued development of positive racial identity through the use of mentor texts, writing experiences, and work with local and national authors.

A generous grant from the Heineman Foundation has allowed us to extend the Summer Writing Insitute to a 3-week program. The grant covers costs for author visits, books and stipends for student participants, as well as lunch each day.

You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you probably can’t, but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world… The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way people look at reality, then you can change it.
– James Baldwin
