Learn about our Summer reading program.

Over the summer, the average student loses 2.7 months of knowledge gained during the school year. One way to prevent this “summer learning loss” is reading. Recent research reports that students who read 4 books over the summer greatly reduce this summer learning loss. We also know that reading is a great any-time activity! Students who read regularly increase their vocabulary, improve comprehension, and tend to do better on standardized tests.

With all of this in mind, BRMA challenges all students, their families, and mentors to read! To kick off summer reading, all participants in BRMA are invited to read one book chosen to foster a love of reading and create opportunities for conversation between students, their families, and mentors. Through the Heineman Grant, BRMA is able to provide a copy of the book to read to every student, family member, and mentor who wishes to participate.
